Razumevanje specifičnosti kritike kitajske sodobne umetnosti

Ob primerih določenih kitajskih umetnikov je Ida Hiršenfelder na Čajanki predstavila njihovo delovanje in vpletenost v širših družbenih okvirih, ki veljajo na Kitajskem.

Over the course of the last ten years, Westerners have begun to introduce Chinese avant garde art to the world, mostly through exhibitions at institutions in the West. But, do Westerners really understand Chinese avant garde art? The answer I belive, is no. From the beginning of the 1990s, a number of Western curators, critics, and collectors (amongst others) have jumped aboard airplanes to Beijing and with a few telephone numbers which they obtained from a friend in China, located a Chinese artist or critic. Then, this local contact would take the Western visitor to call on the broken-down studios of one artist after another. Phone number in hand, they would then procede to do the same in Shanghai, Hangzhou and other cities in search og Chinese artists.
