Tinta 2024 | Anna Haifisch: The Gods of Chili and Mice

10 October 2024 > 07 November 2024 Kindly invitated to the opening of the "The Gods of Chili and Mice"exhibition by Anna Haifisch on Thursday, 10th October, at 8 pm, at the Alkatraz Gallery. The exhibition is a part of Tinta Comics Festival.

Anna Haifisch, a German comics artist and illustrator known for her elaborate and original poetics, presents a selection of drawings, prints, and posters from her colorful creative oeuvre at the Alkatraz Gallery. Her work is inhabited by a multitude of anthropomorphic animals. Her artistic expression is characterized by cheerful colors, consisting of strong and saturated shades, which serve as the foundation for fragile, minimalist, yet highly expressive line drawings and a unique visual-narrative language.

In her works, she plays with the iconography of modern popular culture, manifesting in numerous references to the history of comics, animation, and art. With subtle humor and irony, she reveals the absurdities of everyday life and the eccentricities of modern times.

Andrej Štular is participating in the exhibition with objects inspired by the works of Anna Haifisch.

Anna Haifisch (born 1986) is one of the most recognizable contemporary German comics artists, best known for her series of short comics The Artist. With a humorous touch and a hint of (self-)irony, she explores the perennial struggles of artists, from financial uncertainty to existential doubts about the value of artistic work. Her debut graphic novel, Von Spatz, which has recently been published in Slovenian translation by Stripburger, tackles similar themes. Haifisch’s comics feature anthropomorphic animal characters who navigate the absurdities of everyday life. Her artistic style is characterized by minimalist yet highly expressive line drawings and a vibrant color palette. Von Spatz is a darkly humorous tale about a sanctuary for troubled artists in the hills of sunny California, where famous authors like Walt Disney, Tomi Ungerer, and Saul Steinberg also end up. Through their struggles, doubts, and disappointments, the comic reveals that romanticized notions of artistic genius are far from reality, reminding us that artists are, after all, only human.
