11 June 2024 > 11 July 2024 Kindly invited to the mini online exhibition "Deterioration of Form" by Marija Klun, which is a part of Unfamiliar Area project.
In the artwork Deterioration of Form, Marija Klun delves into the concept of form and one of its definitions, which is determined by the external appearance, contours or outlines of something or someone. With the work, she demonstrates how the definition not only became reality, but also the central point of our perception in today's world. Social media, magazines, hypersexualised advertising and film characters contribute to the creation of a society in which the ultimate goal is to adapt to unrealistic, superficial beauty standards. This pervasive mindset forms individuals into identical replicas, whereby the true essence of the form is devalued.
In her artwork Deterioration of the Form, Klun employs her artistic process so as to symbolise and emphasise the aforementioned critique. By means of creating a mould of a human body, using adhesive tape, painting the interior with pink acrylic colour and assembling these parts into a standing plastic model, she creates a visual representation of how society attempts to shape individuals. Details in the red acrylic colour additionally stress the artificial nature of those imposed standards.
The transformative aspect of Klun's project starts with her burning the statue with a small torch. This act of gradual destruction, which results in ripples and holes, metaphorically illustrates the corrosive effect of social pressures on the individual's sense of self. As the sculpture melts and shrinks, it serves as a reminder of how the merciless pursuit of symmetry undermines individuality. Through her work, Klun subtly, but eloquently emphasises the fragility and fluidity of identity and reminds us of the value of authenticity in the world that often devalues it.
