Unfamiliar Area | Pika Terpin: Cancer

29 October 2022 > 29 November 2022 Kindly invited to the mini online exhibition "Unfamiliar Area" by Pika Terpin "Cancer", curated by Nina Baznik.

The illustration Cancer is an image of a strange creature in an empty imaginary space. The face is without eyeballs, the body is sinuous and drawn from tree roots. The illustrated character is half plant and half of known human origin. Multiple rows of teeth and gums make the illustration human, whereas the roots, background and colours indicate the plant part of the illustration.

The work of Pika Terpin is a drawn realisation when the unconscious transforms into the conscious. The unconscious is subconscious and inaccessible to the individual in real time. Over time, difficult and unpleasant findings are modelled in the brain into clear thoughts that can be terrifying, unbearable or unpleasant for the individual's daily existence. The unconscious in the Cancer illustration is not dreamy or pleasant, but rather genuinely painful and strange.
