UPATA & Igor Šinkovec: V gozdu (In the Forest)

19 January 2022 > 18 February 2022 Kindly invitated do the opening of the comics and illustration exhibition "In the Forrest" by UPATA and Igor Šinkovec on Wednesday, 19th January, at 7 p.m at Alkatraz Gallery, ACC Metelkova.

The opening event in the new year 2022 is the staple of Stripburger's yearly program, this time in its 17th iteration: the international project, that brings also a contest in comics and animation for the youngest fans of the said media. As usual, each time we present two artists who provide inspiration for the contestants: this year it’s an Italian artist who creates under the pen name of UPATA, and the Slovenian comics artist, illustrator and animation artist Igor Šinkovec.

The exhibition, ambientally envisioned and conceived by Andrej Štular, will present in detail Clement the Rabbit, the main protagonist of Šinkovec’s comics story for children titled Hunter’s Luck (Minimundus collection, Stripburger/Forum Ljubljana, 2020). The story was created as a comics adaptation of the Sleeping Rabbit Slovenian folk tale. Clement the Rabbit takes advantage of the hunter’s overly ambitious entrepreneurial plans that stumble and fall when reality hits them hard. Apart from the artwork from the book, the exhibition will feature other drawings and illustrations from the artist’s rich and creative body of work. On the other hand, the Italian artist UPATA presents her tiny fictional being called Mlom, a curious hybrid between a dog and a rabbit. Mlom is a kind and naive critter living in a fairy-tale world which it shares with other mysterious magical creatures. Although timid and gentle, Mlom loves adventures and is often joined in them by his feathered friend Pida who helps it overcome all obstacles on their way. The exhibition will include, apart from the artist’s comics and illustrations, excerpts from her nascent animation movie.

Igor Šinkovec (1978) is an illustrator, animation and comics artist. He’s been collaborating with many publishing houses in Slovenia and abroad, illustrating books and textbooks, while his illustrations are being regularly published in magazines such as Ciciban, Cicido, PIL etc. His work is often presented in group and solo exhibitions and illustration biennials. He received, among other awards, the Kristina Brenkova original illustrated book award in 2020 for his illustrations for the Timbuktu, Timbuktu book by Peter Svetina. Recently he’s been focusing mostly on book illustration and comics, but he also likes to work in animation as well. UPATA is the pen name of a young Italian visual artist Elisa Turrin (Pordenone, 1996) who works in illustration, comics, animation and film. She’s graduated from the Academy of visual arts in Bologna and continued her studies at the ISIA school in Urbino (Italy). She’s been a regular contributor to the Mataran satirical magazine since 2015 and co-authored the Pangolino project that received the best coronavirus-themed project award at the comics festival TCBF in Treviso in 2020. She published her debut comics album Untamed in that same year, while last year she’s created a comics story for the Materia Degenere 2 (Degenerate Matter, Diabolo Edizioni) comics anthology as well.
