Nika Oblak and Primož Novak / SAETCHI COLLECTION

13 December 2007 > 27 December 2007 Installation, mixed media, work in progress

Saetchi Collection is an installation composed of several replicas of artworks by commercially successful contemporary artists. In the installation we draw an analogy between the art market and the global economy by slightly changing the names of the represented artists, a strategy commonly used in copying fashion or technical trade marks, where the original name is changed, but still recognizable. For example Adidas becomes Amidas, or Hitachi is turned in Fitachi.

Saetchi collection deals with the absurdity of the contemporary art market, where market value of the artwork exceeds its artistic merit. As Charles Saatchi once said, when an artist becomes a star, he is able to sell anything he touches. Our work questions the relation between the original and copy in contemporary art and enables anyone to afford artwork by Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons ..., actually Damien Horst, Jeff Koonst ...
